Obituary
Mr. James Steadman
At his home in Bonaparte Iowa April 2, 1895, James Steadman aged 83 years, 7 months, 24 days. Deceased was born in Kingston, Rhode Island, Aug. 8, 1811. He grew to manhood in his native state and was married to Miss Mariah, Tennant. Four children were born to them, two sons and two daughters. They came to Iowa in 1840 or 41. His wife died at a little town called Columbus, west of Bentonsport, and was buried at Lexington, a place one mile west of Bonaparte, in 1843. In that year he removed to St. Louis, Mo., where on Feb. 8, 1845, he was married to Mrs. Elizabeth Swift Quinn. He then returned to Bonaparte where he resided until his death. To this union 10 children were born, five sons and five daughters, of this number six are living, three sons and three daughters, thus leaving his companion and eight children to mourn their loss. He was for many years a member of the Baptist church and a consistent Christian, an industrious, Peaceable citizen. In his death the people of Bonaparte have lost one of their oldest and best citizens, his wife a faithful companion and his children a kind parent. The funeral took place from the Baptist church in Bonaparte, April 4, 1895, Rev. Geo. W. Barber of Eldon conducting the service.
James Steadman, an aged resident of our town died on Tuesday and was buried in the Bonaparte cemetery on Thursday. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. G. W. Barber. He, was 83 years of age. Old age, an infirmity was the cause of his death.
