Steadman Cemetery, Tolland, Hampden, Massachusetts, USA
Notes: Steadman Cemetery - Rivers Rd., Tolland, MA
10 graves known possibly more. Earliest known marker: Samuel Steadman I, b. 22 Jan 1754, d. 16 Jan 1759. Grave stones in this cemetery spell Steadman either with or without the "a" [Stedman]
Notes from the local historian, Roy Jinks:
"The South Quarter Cemetery was not the first one on Rivers Road. The first cemetery was the Steadman Cemetery, located diagonally across the road from Ed and Jan Kasiski. This cemetery was completely demolished, probably before 1900, although it is illustrated on early maps that pre-date the 1850's. We owe a large debt of thanks to Ed and Jan Kasiski for their hard work in the reconstruction of this Historical burial place.
"The Steadman homestead was almost directly across Rivers Road from the Kasiski house. The Steadmans were very early settlers in this area - their homestead was probably established prior to 1754. Samuel Steadman and his wife, Sarah Hull, had 13 children. Their first born, (and probably the first born child in town), was Samuel Steadman I. He was born January 22, 1754 and died on January 17, 1759 at 5 years of age, to become the first to rest in the Steadman cemetery. It is important not to confuse Samuel I with the Steadman's sixth child, who was named Samuel Steadman, Jr.
"The Steadman children & grandchildren married members of local families. Some of these names are: Phoebe Miller, John Manchester, Eli Beach, and Slocum. By the 1830's the Steadman Cemetery was probably full. The remaining Steadmans moved west to Ohio, and sold or gave their property to David Slocum who had married Phoebe Steadman. We know that this cemetery holds the remains of Phoebe Slocum and Timothy Miller as well as those of Samuel Steadman and his wife Sarah Hull Steadman, the original homesteaders to the land."
This Samuel Ste(a)dman is the second son of Thomas Stedman and Hannah McCoon of South Kingstown, Rhode Island. An interesting aspect of this discovery is that it proves that Samuel had left RI in the 1750s, not the 1770s, as thought otherwise. The data above is incorrect in that Samuel I was not the first son; the first son was Tristram who was born in RI in 1751. Much of this family did go to Ohio; however, some went Tyringham, MA and thence to NY and points west.
