Bowen & Co., 1896 Lewis Postle Lisle, M.D., one of the most prominent and successful physicians of Celina, was born at Columbus, Ohio, March 23, 1853. He is a son of William and Sarah (McWilliams) Lisle, both of whom were born near Columbus, Ohio, the former in 1811, the latter in 1825. The Lisles are of Scotch descent, and the McWilliams family of Irish ancestry. William Lisle, having followed farming most of his life, is now retired and is the oldest man in Prairie Township, Franklin County, Ohio. His father, Washington [Note: error James] Lisle, was one of the pioneers of that county, emigrating from Kentucky to Ohio at a very early day. William Lisle has lived on the farm on which he was reared for the past fifty-four years. He has been a very active, industrious and successful farmer, and now owns a tract of of 600 acres of land in Franklin County, Ohio, six miles from the City of Columbus, Ohio. He also owns a fifty acre tract of woods which has never been culled and is in its primeaval condition. Dr. Lisle was reared on his father's farm up to the age of 16. The education he received in the district schools was previous to this time, and he then went to Lebanon, where he attended school for three terms. For four terms he was then engaged in teaching school, and afterwards returned to Lebanon, where he graduated in the scientific courses in 1874. After graduating from the National Normal university he began reading medicine with Dr. Hamilton of Columbus, as his preceptor, remaining under the instruction of Dr. Hamilton two and a half years, doing considerable office work during the last half year. In 1876 he graduated from the Cincinnati College of Medicine and Surgery with high honors, being one of the five that received the mark of 100% on their examination. Almost immediately after his graduation, he located in Florence, Marion County, Kansas, and there practised his profession for three years. In 1879 he returned to Ohio, locating in Columbus, and practising there until 1881, when he went to New York, and entered the Bellevue Hospital Medical College, graduating from that institution in 1883. He alo took private instruction under Dr. Jospeh E. Bryant of Bellevue Hospital Medical College, in operative surgery, and in surgical dressing, and also private instructions of Profs. A. A. Smith and W. H. Katzenboch of Bellevue, in physical diagnosis, and also private instruction under Prof. Ogden Doremus of Bellevue in urinary analysis and examinations for poisoning. Returning to Columbus, Dr. Lisle resumed his practise there which he continued until November 4, 1891, when he came to Celina, where he has since practised in connection with his wife. Dr. Lisle is a member of the Ohio State Medical Association, and also of the Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias. Dr. Lisle is one of a family of four sons and two daughters. J. M. Lisle is a practising physician of Columbus; W. J. Lisle is a practising physician of Pataskala, Licking County, Ohio, and has served two terms in the Ohio legislature; George the youngest son is now at home in Franklin County, and is a successful and thrifty farmer. Dr. and Mrs. Lisle were married June 24, 1886, and a brief sketch of Mrs. Lisle follows: Mrs. Lida C. Lisle, of Celina, Ohio, was born in London, Madison County, Ohio, April 11, 1865. Her preliminary education was obtained in the public schools of London, and she completed her literary education in Otterbein university graduating from this institution with the class of 1884, with the degree of bachelor of science. Her professional education was obtained in Starling Medical College at Columbus, Ohio, she graduating from that institution in 1888, with the degree of M.D. Previous to entering the latter mentioned college she read medicine with her husband about two years. Immediately after graduation she began the practise of medicine in connection with her husband, and has ever since continued with unusual success. Mrs. Lisle is a daughter of Rev. Levi Cunningham, deceased, who was a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was born in Washington County, Ohio, in 1812, and his death occurred in Westerville, Ohio, in 1885. His widow, who now resides in Westerville, bore the maiden name of Isabel Chetely, and was born near Belfast, Ireland, in 1825, coming to America in 1835, with her parents. They located in Philadelphia, where they both died a few years after arriving in this country. When a young woman she removed to Virginia, where she lived until she was married to Rev. Mr. Cunningham, who was a member of the Ohio Methodist conference for forty years. Mrs. Lisle is the mother of one child, William Stanley, who was born Aug. 11, 1889. She is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, is fine shcolar outside of her profession, and taught school two terms, one in Kansas and one in Ohio, previous to her marriage. She is also a thorough musician, having graduated in the musical department of Otterbein university. Mrs. Lisle is thus a lady of much more than ordinary intellectual ability and of rare accomplishments, and is an ornament to society as well as a most conscientious woman, wife, and mother. LISLE IS DEAD; PHYSICIAN FOR 35 YEARS Attack of Heart Disease Brings Death at Age of 66 - Formely practiced in Celina Dr. Lewis Postle Lisle, 35 years a physician of Columbus and Celina, and the last of three brothers belonging to the medical profession died last evening at his residence, 187 Lexington Ave., aged 66 years. He was born on a farm near Columbus and received his degree from Miami Medical University, Cincinnati. An intern and staff physician, he served in several hospitals, among them Bellevue in New York. Dr. Lisle practised in Celina 10 years before coming to Columbus. He had suffered for some time with heart disease before a fatal attack Saturday. Of his brothers, one, Dr. William S. (sic) Lisle, died in 1915, and the other Dr. J. M. Lisle, less than a year ago. Survived are his widow, sister, Mrs. Delia Hubbard, Columbus, and son, William S. | 194 | About 1776 Shadrach married Miss Anna Stasia Willey (Annastasia), born Saturday, June 23, 1753, daughter of John and Aisle Willey of Kent County, Delaware. Shadrach and family then packed up, said goodbye to their eldest son Zadoc (who chose to remain in Delaware with his wife and children) and moved to Cecil County, Maryland -- where on Sunday, May 12, 1807, son John married Miss Rachel Vandyke (Cecil County, MD Marriage Licenses 1777-1840, copied by The Captain Jeremiah Baker Chapter DAR; Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., Baltimore, 1976; page 27). Shadrach, Anna Stasia, 2 males and 1 female were all that was left of the children at home in the 1810 MD federal census (Cecil County, MD, Federal Census 1810, page 237, page 11, printed). By early 1810 Elizabeth (Postles) Brown, husband Israel P. and 4 children were already in OH in time for the birth of William on March 2, 1810. Job (another son of Shadrach's) and his wife Elizabeth (Webb) Postles and their children, Mary, Anna Mariah, John, a baby who died probably in Zanesville, and Eliza were also in Ohio (per Postles Family Journal). Upon completion of his legal affairs, the family once more packed up -- bid farewell to his brother-in-law (who resided just 5 residences away from Shadrach) Samuel Broomley and children -- as Sarah (Shadrach's sister) had died by the time the 1810 federal census was taken; loaded up the wagon and started on their long journey to Ohio. From the date of the Power of Attorney (September 10, 1810) until Shadrach purchased his property (230 acres) from Lucas Sullivant on October 31, 1810 -- the family had only 51 days to get to Franklinton, Ohio. Many accounts have been given of how many and who traveled with Shadrach (per Postles Family Journal). Therefore, taking everything into consideration -- the group probably included; beside Shadrach and Anna Stasia (who were ages 55 and 57, respectively): John and Rachel (Vandyke) Postles and daughter Kezziah (age 2) Son, Solomon -- a young man 21 years old, who could very well have helped escort his brother and sister's families to Ohio and returned to help his parents and family make the same trip. Son, Stephen, age 19. Son, Gabriel, age 12. A small group of this size would have joined a wagon train for the trip. It must be remembered the early routes traveled were nothing better than wilderness cow paths -- muddy when wet and dusty when dry, full of ruts and holes. Therefore, either the Conestoga Covered Wagon or the Prairie Schooner was used for traveling. Both were long and narrow with a curved bottom raising at both ends; which kept any load from shifting when traveling up and down hills. Canvas, which was light weight and could be easily removed, was stretched tight over curved wooden staves, following the length of the wagon; with a seat for the driver at one end and a round opening at the other. It looked much like the women's old fashioned bonnets (both kept out the sun, dust, and rain). Depending on the type of wagon utilized, either a team of 6 to 8 horses (for the Conestoga Wagon) or 2 to 4 oxen (for the Prairie Schooner) were hitched up. Oxen were probably most used in that they were stronger and could remain hitched to the wagon while eating grass -- and in case of Indian attack it was advantageous to have the wagon ready for a quick get-a-way, if possible. Only essential belongings were loaded, leaving behind less than sturdy items such as crystal, etc. No accounting has been given of the perils suffered by the Shadrach Postles family during their migration from Maryland to Ohio. But, they had to travel about 438 miles in 51 days; which meant they needed to average at least 9 miles per day or better. At most, a covered wagon could travel about 12 to 18 miles per day; barring mishap, i.e. broken wheels, unfavorable weather, rough terrain, etc. -- then making as little as 2 miles. So the trip was a "cinch" as respects to miles covered. Arriving in Ohio they would have joined up with their daughter's family (the Israel P. Brown's) and son Job's family -- already in Zanesville (per Postles Family Journal) -- continuing on to Franklinton. In order to cross the Scioto River before 1815 (when the first wooden toll bridge was built by Lucas Sullivant) it was necessary to take Jacob Armitage's ferry boat (History of Franklin County, by William T. Martin, 1858) to the log cabin village of Franklinton, where the Postle families settled in. | Family F44

Father and Mother both born Ohio. Harriett Lisle Worley remembers going to "Uncle" Caps for Lisle family reunions as a child. They lived in Columbus, but had a cottage, with a large screened in porch and yard on the Big Darby River. The reunions would be held here. She remembers they were alot of fun, but stopped when she was still young. Osmer was a lawyer. Professionally, he went by the name "Charles".
