- Obituary quoted in James Carter, Wigton Horner Family, p. 111:
Member of Presbyterian Church for 24 years and for 23 years a highly esteemed and efficient elder. Born in Muskingum County in the immediate vicinity of his late residence. An organizing member of of the Roseville Church, he was from the beginning of its history a pillar. A farmer in moderate circumstances with a large family.
Action taken by session of Roseville Presbyterian Church March 5, 1873:
"Resolved that the Session hereby make record of the 22 years of faithful and self-sacrificing labors of Brother Wigton as an elder of this church, in all which time he has by his devout leading in worship of the prayer meeting, the sabbath school and the family, by his active and laborious services in visiting house to house and member to member, by his contributions of time and means, often at much sacrifice, as well by his ready and welcome exhortation and encouragement in public and private, proved himself a workman that needeth not to be ashamed and a faithful witness to the truth as it is in Christ Jesus."
1875 Atlas of Perry County, Ohio - 119 1/2 acres in Harrison Twp. R14 T14 S 9 - southwest corner of Roseville. School located on property. According to James Carter, located adjacent to Roseville Pottery Museum operated by Ohio Historical Society.
Beers, History of Fairfield and Perry Counties, Ohio, 1883, p. 184-185. Unity Church is one of the oldest in Perry County and is the mother Presbyterian Church. Organized in 1816. James Wigton was member and left when Roseville Presbyterian Church was organized Oct 20, 1849.
James Carter, Wigton - Carter Family, p. 91: During the Civil War, James and his wife were "copperheads". They continued to go to church every Sunday though not a person spoke to them.
