  Biography: Josephine GRUETER was born in Massachusetts sometime after 1874. She was the first surviving child of Bernard GR?TER and Josephine MIETHE. She was probably baptized at Holy Trinity Church in Boston. She graduated from the Holy Trinity Grammar School where she learned to read and write pure German and correct English, taught by the German Franciscan Nuns from Philadelphia. At home, the family spoke the Platt Deutsch dialect of German. Josephine worked, with her sister Clara, for many years in Schraft's Candy Factory in Charlestown.
