  Samuel was born in Ohio in November 1843. About 1847 he went with his family to Iowa and about 1852 his family migrated in "the Lisle wagon train" and went to Union County, Oregon. He usually seems to have gone by the name Irvin. His grandmother's maiden name was Irwin. Samuel owned a ranch where he raised cattle and hogs. He married twice. His first wife was Martha Jane (Marrs) (Robertson) Marr. They had three children. In 1885, after her death in 1884, he married a widow Mrs. Nancy (Stanbury) Greenfield. He died in 1913 and is buried in Oregon. His gravestone shows his middle name as Irvin. History of Umatilla and Morrow County, 1902, p. 447 - when 3 years old accompanied his father from Ohio to Van Buren Co., Iowa. Six years later he came to Multnomah County, Oregon via the plain route. Came to Umatilla as early as 1865 and located at Granite Creek where he was engaged in mining. He went to work for man 2 1/2 miles east of Echo, Oregon, and subsequently bought his land. He added to it so he now owns a section; nearly half is planted in alfalfa which he uses to feed cattle. He is large cattle dealer. He had no children. [Note: he did have children]
